International No Diet Day

from Miriam Berg, Council on Size and Weight Discrimination

The International No Diet Coalition represents groups, professionals, and individuals who are working in the various fields related to size acceptance, health at any size, anti-dieting, eating disorders awareness, self-esteem, and body image. There are more than 500 coalition members, all of whom endorse these goals:

To protest our culture's obsession with dieting and weight loss

To combat the influence of the media and of the diet and fashion industries which promote those obsessions

To educate individuals and health care practitioners that their goal should be overall health and well-being, rather than weight loss for its own sake

To proclaim our independence from society's narrow standards of attractiveness

To celebrate the diversity of body sizes and shapes

International No Diet Day is celebrated each year on May 6th. Events are planned and carried out locally, and groups around the country and around the world have sponsored everything from candlelight vigils to scale smashing contests, educational workshops and speeches, and street theater. One group is calling local bookstores asking them to display anti-diet books for that week. Another group encourages women to clean out their closets of clothing they've been keeping "until they got thin", then collects and donates the clothing to women's shelters.
