Good In Bed
by
Jennifer Weiner
When Cannie Shapiro told
her boyfriend, Bruce, she wanted them to take a break
from the relationship, she had no idea their love life
would become the subject of Bruce's magazine column,
"Good In Bed," subtitled "Loving A Larger
Woman." Bruce had written:
"Loving
a larger woman is an act of courage in this world,
and maybe it's even an act of futility. Because, in
loving C., I knew I was loving someone who didn't
believe that she herself was worthy of anyone's love."
Thus
the author, Jennifer Weiner, addresses a universal fear
fat women often feel in their hearts to be true. Ms.
Weiner adeptly guides her heroine, Cannie, through the
pitfalls of ending one love and moving on to another, all
the while coming to terms with living in a large body.
Cannie,
spirited, strong, and clever, has a bigger problem than
her size. She deals with issues of abandonment rooted in
her father's having left the family emotionally and,
ultimately, literally.
"
'Love,' I said, is the rug they pull out from under
you. Love is Lucy always lifting the football at the
last second so that Charlie Brown falls on his ass.
Love is something that every time you believe in it,
it goes away. Love is for suckers, and I'm not going
to be a sucker ever again.' "
You
will love Cannie. She has a delightful sense of humor and,
overall, a balanced and intelligent outlook on life. Once
she comes to appreciate the friends and family who love
her, Bruce, his column, and his new girlfriend take
backstage to what is really important.
