Several years ago a music video aired frequently on MTV
that showed a beautiful, chubby little girl dressed in a
colorful bee costume, complete with antenna. She does a
happy little dance at a school function of some sort. The
other dancers are all dressed alike in standard ballerina
style. Their dance is stiff, boring, and regimental; the
little bee girl twirls and bobs and smiles for anyone who
will watch. But everyone she dances for just stares at
her, unsmiling, not understanding her or her happiness.
Perplexed and rejected, she dances her little heart out
for everyone she encounters until, discouraged and hurt,
she runs away.
Imagine her excitement at finding a group of people
dancing and cavorting in a field of wildflowers,
obviously enjoying themselves . . . all dressed in an
array of colorful costumes. She runs to join them, her
dance even wilder and freer. She has found her element; a
group of people who are like her, who accept, understand,
and welcome her. She can be herself.
Everyone needs support, friendship, respect, and acceptance. If
you aren't finding it in your current group of friends and
relationships,
perhaps it's time to build a new group. If you aren't
getting it from your relatives, perhaps it is time to lay
down some rules.
Demand respect from every relationship in your life. It's the least you
deserve.
